IPL Trivia: First Team to Defend the Title in IPL History

Since then, the IPL has become one of the biggest cricket tournaments on the planet, and it has produced many superstars in this game. A total of ten teams take part in the IPL, and every team has some of the biggest names in the game. Chennai Super Kings are probably the most successful team in IPL history. They have played 14 seasons until now and made the playoffs 12 times. CSK is also the only team that has not finished at the bottom of the table in any season.

CSK made it to the final of the inaugural season in 2008. But unfortunately, they lost the final against Rajasthan Royals. But they won their maiden title in 2010 when they beat Mumbai Indians in the finals at Wankhede Stadium by 22 runs. In 2011, they successfully defended the title. CSK beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final by 58 runs at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

With this, they became the first team to defend a title or win consecutive seasons of the IPL. CSK faced suspensions in 2016 and 2017. But they made a stunning comeback to win the 2018 edition, beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final. CSK then won the 2021 season, and they beat Kolkata Knight Riders in the finals.

All these titles have come under MS Dhoni. CSK has won the joint-most with MI. However, they have played in ten IPL finals, which is the most in history. Apart from CSK, there is another team that has successfully defended the title, and it is none other than Mumbai Indians. MI won consecutive seasons in 2019 and 2020, respectively, to do so. MI has won all five titles under Rohit Sharma.
