Top 5 Oldest Cricketers Set to Play in IPL 2025

MS Dhoni, Faf du Plessis, R. Ashwin, Moeen Ali, Rohit Sharma

The IPL has shattered several myths – it features just as much contribution from seasoned cricketers as it does from young talents. Can you believe that five players over the age of 37 are set to play in IPL 2025? The first name on that list is, of course, MS Dhoni, a name that needs no introduction. But who follows him?

So, here are the top five oldest players before the 2025 season:

Brad Hogg – 45 years, 92 days
MS Dhoni – 43 years, 146 days
Pravin Tambe – 42 years, 216 days
Muttiah Muralitharan – 42 years, 35 days
Chris Gayle – 42 years, 7 days

Will anyone ever break Brad Hogg’s record? In 2016, the Australian became the oldest player  in  IPL  history,  playing  at  45  years  and  92  days.  So  far,  this  record  stands unchallenged, and it won't be broken this year. However, if MS Dhoni plays in the 2026 season, this record could be surpassed. Dhoni continues to be a fan-favourite and Tomesh Kulkarni, the editor of Betting Apps India, seems to think that Dhoni could very well be the one to break this record.

Pravin Tambe, Muttiah Muralitharan, and Chris Gayle follow closely behind.  Now,  let's  look  at  the  five  players  over  37  who  will  be part of IPL 2025:

MS Dhoni: Born on July 7, 1981, Dhoni has been a cornerstone of Chennai Super Kings since the very first IPL season in 2008. Chennai's opening match of the season will be on March 23, and on that day, Dhoni will be 43 years and 259 days old. Each match, run, wicket, catch, and stumping this season will further cement his legacy. To date, he has accumulated 5243 runs in 264 matches, averaging 39.13. His four IPL titles with CSK remain his crowning achievement. If CSK hadn't faced a two-year suspension, Dhoni would hold the record for playing every IPL season with a single team.

Faf du Plessis: The former South African spinner was born on July 13, 1984, Faf du Plessis has been a consistent presence in the IPL since 2012. Over the course of 145 matches, he has scored 4571 runs at an average of 35.99. In IPL 2025, he will be representing the Delhi franchise, with their opening match scheduled for March 24. Rohit Sharma: Born on April 30, 1987, Rohit Sharma is an Indian cricketer known primarily for his batting. He has been a key figure in Mumbai Indians' record IPL title wins, contributing significantly to the team's success. With 6628 runs from 257 matches at an average of 29.72, including two centuries, Rohit has established himself as one of the IPL's top performers. Although he is no longer the captain of Mumbai this season, he still commands a contract worth ₹16.30 crore. Mumbai's first match is on March 23, and on that day, Rohit will be 37 years and 327 days old. He began his IPL career with Deccan Chargers but is now widely regarded as the "face of Mumbai Indians.”

Moeen Ali: Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali, born on June 18, 1987, will be playing for the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, this season.
